What You Can Control vs. What You Can't

Updated: Sep 9, 2018

In times of uncertainty, it's easy to get carried away with both fear and worry. The fact of the matter is that focusing our time and energy on both of these things is a complete waste of our resources. We spend a lot of time speculating about what might happen, only to realize it usually never does. We also waste a lot of time circling around things that are out of our control. If this is the way you're programmed, it won't be easy to make changes to direct your energy towards the things you can change and that do matter. With some conscious effort I promise it will be worth it when you start to feel a sense of relief as you remove the weight of the world off of your shoulders.

Whenever you find yourself spiraling around the latest current events or external influences affecting your life or the lives of those around you, ask yourself two very important questions:

1. Does it matter? 2. Can I control it?

If you can't answer "yes" to both of these questions, then do yourself a favour and move on. I have been a worrier my whole life and so I speak from experience when I say "let it go!"

In no way am I suggesting to stop caring, but I am suggesting to stop spending so much time focusing your energy on things you can't change. Instead, if there is something you find yourself passionate about but that appears to be out of your control, redirect your energy and find a way to make a small difference in the life of someone affected by the situation - that way, everybody wins!
